Best GPS & Fleet Tracking Software for Small Service Businesses

Quick Answer

The best GPS and fleet tracking software for most small service businesses is Linxup. It publishes a standard per-vehicle price, offers no-contract and multi-year options, and covers vehicles, equipment and tools in one app.

If you already run ServiceTitan, Jobber or Housecall Pro, start with that platform’s GPS option or its listed fleet partners.

Best For

  • Best overall: Linxup, for published pricing and flexible contract terms
  • Best for ServiceTitan shops: ServiceTitan Fleet Pro or ClearPathGPS
  • Best for Jobber users: Force by Mojio or FleetSharp
  • Best for Housecall Pro users: Housecall Pro’s built-in employee GPS
  • Best for larger or growing fleets: Samsara, Motive, Verizon Connect or Geotab
  • Best for maintenance: Fleetio, paired with a GPS tracking provider

How We Tested

We use every tool as a service, not as a vendor demo. This means paying for the trial or lowest‑paid plan ourselves and performing an end‑to‑end field‑service job flow in each tool. The evaluation criteria are based on daily operations, and each review contains a “don’t buy” summary to avoid wastes of time and money.

Eight operational criteria are applied to every field-service software

We operate every tool as a real business would, meaning we sign up as an actual company and pay for the trial or low-end plan. We do not use vendor-added demos, preloaded data, or any other shortcuts.

  • We create a trial account in the tool with our company data
  • We purchase the trial or cheapest plan as real customers would
  • We perform a sample complete-field-service-job workflow in each tool, in this order:
  • Create a field-service job (customer, service, and cost data)
  • Dispatch a technician (assignment and notification)
  • Do the job (inspect, take photos, notes, and sign in the app)
  • Invoice the job (generate and send an invoice)
  • Receive payment (card on file, link, or in-app payment)
  • Every evaluation ends with a “don’t buy” summary.

What Small Service Businesses Need From GPS & Fleet Tracking Software

Most contractors do not need an enterprise telematics platform. They need to know where vehicles are, where available vehicles are, and which technician is nearest the next job.

The features that matter to a small business:

  • Live location: Enable faster dispatch decisions and more accurate customer ETAs.
  • Geofencing and after-hours alerts: Detect unauthorized movements or activity.
  • Trip history and idle reports: Review mileage, routes, driver behaviors and vehicle activity.
  • Maintenance reminders: Track maintenance using mileage, hours or other available vehicle data.
  • Dispatch or FSM integration: Link vehicle location or status information with the scheduling or FSM workflow.
  • Driver behavior and cameras: An optional add-on for small fleets, available on some GPS tracking platforms.

The mistake is to buy the biggest, most powerful GPS tracking software and use only 20% of its features. Instead, focus on the tools used every day, and purchase based on the types of scheduling and vehicle location decisions that must be made. If dispatch is a bigger headache than vehicle tracking, start with a field service management software and only add GPS tracking when more detailed vehicle location data is needed.

How to Choose the Right GPS & Fleet Tracking Software for You?

Ask yourself these questions to narrow down your choices based on fleet size and needs.

Slow down dispatch

Choose software that displays trucks on your dispatch board.

Track fuel and idle waste

Go with GPS tracking features like idle reports and geofences.

Prevent time theft

Try GPS time tracking.

Missed maintenance

Consider adding Fleetio or another system with service alerts.

Safety and insurance

Look into dash cams and driver scores.

Compliance

Confirm ELD requirements.

Based on team size

1-5 vehicles

Linxup, Force, Zubie or GPS tracking built into your FSM like Jobber or Housecall Pro.

5-15 vehicles

Linxup, ClearPathGPS, GPS Trackit plus Fleetio if you need to track maintenance.

More than 15 vehicles

Samsara, Motive, Verizon Connect, Geotab or Azuga.

First, ask yourself these five questions before signing up for any software

  • What is the total first-year cost including any hardware or installation fees?
  • What is the contract length and what are the requirements if you want to cancel or add a vehicle?
  • Who owns the data if you decide to leave the software provider?
  • Will it sync with your FSM and accounting software?
  • Can you test it out with two of your vehicles first?

Self-assessment test

Give yourself a point for every “yes” next to the statements below.

  • I have more than five vehicles on the road at any given time.
  • I have customers calling asking where my tech is.
  • I have had drivers caught using company vehicles for personal use.
  • I am seeing rising fuel costs with no explanation.
  • I use ServiceTitan, Jobber or Housecall Pro as my FSM.
  • I need to stay ELD compliant.
  • I have trailers or high-value equipment that I need to track.
  • I want to use cameras for safety or insurance purposes.

How to read the results

  • 0-2: Start with built-in GPS tracking in your FSM or try a simple solution like Linxup or Force.
  • 3-5: Go for a standalone GPS tracker that will sync with your FSM.
  • 6-8: Narrow it down to Samsara, Motive, Verizon Connect, Geotab or Azuga and compare all-in costs.

FAQ

What is the best GPS fleet tracking software for small businesses?

For most small service businesses, Linxup is my top pick because it publishes a standard per-vehicle price and offers no-contract, 2-year and 3-year options. If you already use ServiceTitan, Jobber or Housecall Pro, start with that platform’s GPS or partner options.

How much does GPS fleet tracking cost per vehicle?

Published and reported prices for small-business tools typically run from the mid-teens to the mid-$30s per vehicle per month. Hardware, installation, cameras and contract terms change the real cost. Always ask for an all-in first-year number before you sign.

Do I need an ELD for my service vans?

Not necessarily. In the U.S., FMCSA ELD rules generally apply to commercial motor vehicles at 10,001 pounds or more, and many pickups and vans fall below that. Canada has its own mandate for federally regulated carriers. Check your vehicles and routes first.

Can I track employees through their phones instead of vehicle devices?

Yes. Jobber and Housecall Pro offer phone-based GPS. Phone tracking works for time and job context, but it depends on the employee’s phone, signal and battery. Vehicle devices keep working independently of drivers.

Is employee GPS tracking legal?

Often yes, but rules on notice and consent vary by state and province. Write a clear policy, tell your team what you track and why, and have an employment lawyer review it. I’m not a lawyer, and this isn’t legal advice.

Which GPS tracking works with ServiceTitan?

ServiceTitan offers Fleet Pro, built in cooperation with Azuga, and lists ClearPathGPS and US Fleet Tracking as marketplace partners. Check ServiceTitan’s marketplace for the current list and pricing.

Should I choose month-to-month or a long contract?

For a first purchase, I prefer month-to-month or the shortest term available. Longer contracts can lower the monthly rate but lock you in if the product is a poor fit. Linxup, ClearPathGPS and Force all advertise flexible terms, so confirm current terms.

Can GPS tracking lower my insurance costs?

It can, but nothing is guaranteed. Vendors such as ClearPathGPS say tracking may help lower insurance premiums, and that depends on your insurer. Call your carrier before you buy and ask whether they discount for telematics, driver scoring or dash cams.

Do small service businesses need dash cams?

No, they are optional. They matter most if you want evidence after an accident or a way to coach drivers. Several vendors sell them as add-ons, including Linxup and ClearPathGPS, which lists a $30 per vehicle per month dash cam add-on. Budget for the extra monthly cost.

Can GPS tracking software track tools and equipment, not just vehicles?

Yes, with some vendors. Linxup offers tool and equipment tracking, but its tool tracking requires a Linxup GPS unit and subscription. GPS Trackit lists asset trackers, and Spireon FleetLocate handles trailers and equipment. Ask each vendor what devices and fees apply.
